PMR-446 Kulomäki, Hyvinkää (Finland) 24 Aug 2009 1500z-

PostitusPostitas oh2jin » P Aug 23, 2009 9:16 pm

I am going to call PMR-446 stations from Kulomäki, Hyvinkää tomorrow on the 24th of August 2009 at 1500z i.e. 18.00 local time. The working channel is PMR-446 CH 8.00. I shall have a more or less short break just before 1800z (i.e. 21.00 local) in order to have some coffee. Then my intention is to carry on activating the hill until 2100z (i.e. 24.00 local) or longer if there are enough corresponding stations. I am going to call corresponding stations in English language because I should like to make as many as possible QSO's with Estonian stations. UNFORTUNATELY I do not understand Estonian language at all, so Finnish and English (and possibly German) are working languages, sri.

QTH is Kulomäki in Hyvinkää

I called until 2052z i.e. 23.52 local but no one answered. Interestingly I heard some traffic just after the local sunset but signals were too weak. Obviously they used radios with Cobra style roger beeps. But the area where the signals were audible was about 5m x 5m and it was in fact in direct line with the site "Zero" used for his record QSO. Most interestin thing was that the Cobra MT-725 was the most sensitive picking up those signals while the MT-725 the second best. Vertex VX-146 didn't hear anything (!). Probably the MT-725 had some advantage from the external power cable workin as a counterpoise.

Eve told me that she recently had a really long PMR-446 QSO with one OM aboard a cruise liner and she was able to communicate with him over one and half an hour! Probably it is more feasible to have seaborne QSOs than these hilltop ones...

I'll have to stay in Helsinki on Wednesday and Thursday and according to my colleague already there the hotel is almost fully booked. So perhaps I'll pay an overnight visit to Tallinn and test the seaborne PMR-446 platform Eve advocated so much.
